Privacy Policy

Short version: recipes stay in your browser unless you choose to sign in, signing in is never required, and the only third parties involved are Google (for sign-in and advertising) and the host this site runs on.

Recipes and lists you save

Everything you save is stored in your browser's local storage, which is a small amount of space a site can use on your own computer or phone. If you never sign in, that's the whole story: nothing is sent to a server, nothing is backed up, and nobody but you, including the person who runs this site, can read it. Two consequences worth understanding:

• Clearing your browser data, or using private browsing, erases your saved recipes permanently unless you've downloaded a backup. There's no copy to restore from otherwise.
• Without signing in, your recipes don't follow you between devices. Each browser has its own separate box.

Signing in with Google changes this, on purpose: see "Signing in with Google" below.

Signing in with Google

Signing in is optional and never required to use this site. If you choose to, Google confirms your identity and shares your email address and name with this site. That information, along with a random login token this site generates (not anything from Google), is stored to recognize you on future visits.

Signing in also assigns a username, a neutral, randomly generated handle like "cozy-kitchen-482" rather than anything drawn from your email or name, since that could otherwise reveal part of your identity to someone the moment you shared a recipe with them. You can change it to whatever you'd like from the account area in the header.

The username is the one piece of account information other people can see. When you share a recipe using the Share button, whoever opens that link sees your username. Your email and name are never included in a shared link and never shown to anyone else.

Once signed in, your recipe box, weekly plan, shopping list, and checked-off items are also stored on a server, tied to your account, so they follow you to another device signed in with the same Google account. This is the one case where your saved data leaves your browser.

Signing out stops this. It doesn't delete anything already saved to your account or already on the device you're using.

Friends and direct sharing

Once signed in, you can search for another person by username and send a friend request. Searching only ever matches usernames, not email addresses or names, and the only thing returned is a matching username, nothing else about that account.

A friend request only becomes a friendship once both people agree. Being someone's friend here lets either of you send a recipe directly into the other's box, skipping the copy-a-link step. A sent recipe sits waiting until the recipient accepts or declines it; declining removes it without adding anything.

You can remove a friend at any time, which stops any further direct sharing between you but doesn't undo anything already accepted.

Importing a recipe from a link

When you paste a recipe URL, that URL is sent to a service run for this site, which fetches the page, reads the recipe data out of it, and sends back just the ingredients and steps. This exists because browsers can't fetch pages from other websites directly.

The URL you submitted is processed to fulfill that request. Fetched pages may be cached briefly to avoid requesting the same page repeatedly. The recipe that comes back is stored only in your browser, as described above.

Advertising

This site is funded by advertising through Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads and measure their performance. Depending on your settings and location, ads may be personalized based on data Google has collected about you across the web, or non-personalized.

Consent in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are shown a consent message before personalized advertising cookies are set, and can consent, decline, or manage individual choices. Declining means you'll see non-personalized ads rather than no ads, since advertising is what funds the site.

Analytics

There is no separate analytics service on this site. No visitor tracking beyond what the advertising provider described above performs, and no profile of you is built by this site itself.

What is never collected

• No password. Signing in uses Google, so this site never sees or stores one.
• No payment information, because nothing is for sale.
• No contact list, photos, or files from your device.
• Nothing from your Google account beyond your name and email address, and only if you choose to sign in.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Like essentially all web hosts, Cloudflare processes technical request data such as IP addresses in order to deliver pages and protect against abuse. That processing is described in Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Children

This site isn't directed at children under 13, and no personal information is knowingly collected from them.

Your choices

• Delete everything you've saved. Clear this site's data in your browser settings, or remove individual recipes in the app.
• Change your username at any time from the account area in the header, if you'd rather use something other than the one assigned at sign-in.
• Remove a friend at any time from the Friends page, which stops any further direct sharing between you.
• Sign out at any time. This stops syncing without deleting anything already saved.
• Change ad personalization. Use My Ad Center, linked above.
• Change your consent choice if you're in a region where the consent message applies, by clearing this site's cookies so the message appears again.
• Block ads. An ad blocker won't break the app's features.

Changes to this policy

If what's collected changes again, this page will be updated before that goes live and the date below will change.
